The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) has developed resources to assist health service organisations align their patient safety and quality improvement programs using the framework of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
The primary aims of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards are to protect the public from harm and to improve the quality of health service provision. Implementation is mandated in all hospitals, day procedure services and public dental services across Australia. When used in assessment they provide a quality assurance mechanism that tests whether relevant systems are in place to ensure that expected standards of safety and quality are met.
The 8 Standards are (not in order of importance):
- Clinical Governance Standard
- Partnering with Consumers Standard
- Preventing and Controlling Infections Standard
- Medication Safety Standard
- Communicating for Safety Standard
- Comprehensive Care Standard
- Blood Management Standard
- Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Standard
All Clinical Neurophysiology Scientists working in Australia, both in Public and Private hospitals and clinics, are encouraged to become conversant in the NSQHS and apply the Standards in their workplace.
